The Tradition of Palm Sunday or Palaspas in the Philippines

Catholics in the Philippines start their Holy Week through Palm Sunday. Families go to the church early in the morning to have their decorated Palm Leaves or “Palaspas” be blessed by the presiding priest while they wave it in the air.

Once these churchgoers have celebrated the Holy Mass, they take these blessed Palm Leaves to their houses to be attached or hung on their windowsills and doors.

If you live here at Ponticelli in Vista Alabang, you may have seen your neighbors and friends do the same.

Many Filipinos believe that these blessed Palm Leaves or Palaspas symbolize their welcoming of Jesus Christ into their homes. On the other hand, there are also people who believe that these Palm Leaves could drive away evil spirits and misfortunes from their homes.
